Practical Probabilistic Approach Using Spreadsheet

Abstract
A practical method for calculating the second
moment reliability index using the optimization tool of
a spreadsheet software is proposed. The method is based
on the perspective of an ellipsoid that just touches the
failure surface in the original space of the variables.
This perspective is mathematically equivalent to the
widely adopted perspective of a sphere in the space of
reduced variates, but provides perhaps a more intuitive
definition of Hasofer and Lind's reliability index. The
ellipsoid approach via spreadsheet is applied to an
example problem on consolidation settlement. It yields
results identical to those of Lagrange multiplier method
and Rackwitz's iterative procedure, but is much simpler
to implement because no partial derivatives are involved
on the user's part. By freeing the engineer from tedious
mathematical calculations, the ellipsoid approach may
reduce the risk of the engineer's not seeing the wood
for the trees. It may also remove one major disincentive
for the use of probability concepts. The paper also
demonstrates the ease of implementing simple Monte Carlo
simulation using a spreadhseet's random number generator
and its built-in Visual Basic programming environment

چکیده

یک روش عملی با استفاده از ابزار بهینه­سازی نرم­افزار صفحه­گسترده برای محاسبه شاخص قابلیت اطمینان ممان دوم[2] ارائه شده است. این روش بر اساس شکل یک بیضی است که فقط سطح شکست (خرابی) در فضای اصلی متغیرها را لمس می­کند. این شکل از لحاظ ریاضی برابر با شکل­ یک کره است که بطور گسترده­ای در فضای متغیرهای کاهش یافته استفاده می­شود، اما احتمالا یک تعریف قابل درک­تر از شاخص قابلیت اطمینان هاسوفر و لیند ارائه می­کند. روش بیضی از طریق صفحه­گسترده برای یک مساله نمونه در مورد تثبیت خاک[3] استفاده می­شود. این روش نتایج یکسانی با روش مضارب لاگرانژ و روش تکراری راکویتز بدست می­آورد، اما بدلیل نداشتن هیچ مشتق جزئی در سمت کاربران استفاده از آن ساده­تر است. با رفع محاسبات ریاضیاتی خسته کننده، روش بیضی ممکن است ریسک درک نکردن وضعیت و گیر کردن در جزئیات را کاهش ­دهد. همچنین این روش ممکن است یک عامل بازدارنده اصلی برای استفاده از مفاهیم احتمال را حذف کند. همچنین این مقاله، سهولت شبیه­سازی مونت کارلو با استفاده از یک مولد عدد تصادفی صفحه­گسترده و محیط برنامه­ریزی ویژوال بیسیک ساختاری آن را نشان می­دهد .
